Halloween festivities scare up big cash for Salem
City officials say Salem took in a record $311,000 in parking receipts over the Halloween weekend. Director of Finance Richard Viscay says the city's Haunted Happenings celebrations benefited from the fact that Halloween fell on a Friday this year, and the weather was pleasant.

WINSTON-SALEM -- A 15-year-old basketball player is in critical condition in a Triad hospital after he collapsed during a junior varsity game. Parkland High School?s Khalid Prince collapsed on Tuesday night while running during the game.

Last May, 52 Salem High seniors -- about a third of the graduates -- split more than $230,000 in grants from their predecessors. At the end of last year, the endowment had reached about $8 million, though it has taken a hit since then with the global economic downturn.
