The Age of Stupid is the new cinema documentary by Franny Armstrong, director of McLibel, and John Battsek, producer of One Day in September. The film is a drama-documentary-animation hybrid which stars Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching archive footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance-
The film is due for release in Spring 2009.
Background
Shot in seven countries over a period of three years, the film features six separate documentary stories, archive footage and lots of animation from, amongst others, Passion Pictures (who are the people behind the Gorillaz animation).
The Age of Stupid was crowd-funded by 220 people who donated between £500 and £35,000 and will receive a pro-rata share in any profits, alongside the 105 crew who worked for survival wages. The producers calculated the carbon footprint of the film to be 94,270 kilograms of CO2. The heavy metal band Dragnerve licensed the track "A Life in Ashes" to the Age of Stupid film.
Channel 4 News broadcast an eight minute feature about the film in February 2008 in association with Dogwoof Pictures.
Crowd funding
The film is "crowd-funded", with the £450k budget being raised by selling „shares“ to 223 individuals and groups. These groups range from a hockey team and a women-s health centre. This is mostly to give it the best chance of reaching a mainstream multiplex audience, but also to retain complete editorial control. These investors all own a percentage of the film - as do the crew, who are working for heavily reduced rates.[1]
