Keane is an Irish surname derived from Ó Catháin, also rendered as O'Cahan, O'Kane, Keane, Kean, Kane, Cain and McCain.[citation needed]. A study by scientists at Trinity College offers support for claims that Ó Catháin's are descended from 5th century Irish king Niall of the Nine hostages, or, at least, paternally related to other families believed to be his descendants.
