Adulthood (rendered as AdULTHOOD) is a British crime film directed, written by and starring Noel Clarke. This film is a sequel to the 2006 film Kidulthood, which Clarke also wrote.
Plot
The film picks up six years after the death of Trife (Aml Ameen) from the first film with the release of Sam (Noel Clarke) from jail where he has been for the past six and a half years for killing Trife. After being released, he goes to the cemetery where he visits Trife's tombstone where he is attacked by Trife's cousin. Trife's cousin warns him that there are people after him and his family because of what he did six years before.
Curious to find out who's after him, Sam tries to find people he knew back in school to try and find out if they know who's after him. First, he visits Claire (Madeleine Fairley), who has been living a fine life ever since Sam was sent to jail six years ago. Claire doesn't know anything about who's after Sam, but tells Sam to go find Moony (Femi Oyeniran), who has also been living a steady life since he was last seen in Kidulthood. He has a girlfriend Kayla (Shanika Warren-Markland) and is attending university (and is probably the only one who went to university, as seen in the film). Moony agrees to sit down with Sam, but has no information about who's after Sam, but warns him about Jay (Adam Deacon), who has gone into a downward spiral after the death of Trife and he might be the person that's after Sam.
Following another plot line, we meet Dabs (Ben Drew), Omen (Jacob Anderson) and Henry (Arnold Oceng). Omen happens to be Sam's younger brother, who was seen in Kidulthood. We are then brought to meet Ike (Nathan Constance) and Andreas (Pierre Mascolo), which both of them run a small illegal pawnshop where they also give drugs to dealers. One of them including Jay. Andreas also happens to be from the first film, who was cut in the face by Trife and the cut mark is still on his face, six years later. Omen leaves the house. Jay later arrives at the house, telling Andreas and Ike that he wants to kill Sam, and is willing to go jail if he gets caught. Instead of letting Jay kill Sam, Andreas suggests that Jay should hire Dabs, and his friends to kill Sam. Jay agrees (even though he knows who Omen is) and is brought to meet Dabs, who reluctantly agrees to kill Sam for 6,000 GBP but Jay warns Dabs that if Omen comes along, don't let him see Sam's face. Dabs agrees. Dabs and Henry leave the house. Henry asks what that whole thing was about, and Dabs tells him everything that happened with him and Jay. Henry disagrees with Dabs on the hit, and the two start up a fight, which results Dabs hitting Henry in the head with a brick.
Sam tries to find Becky at a salon, but only to find Becky's cousin, Lexi (Scarlett Alice Johnson) who tells Sam that Becky hasn't been seen in two months. Lexi has a dark background, where she tells a story later on in the film where she was gang raped some time ago. Same as Moony and Claire, she "doesn't" know who's after Sam. Sam asks if she knows where Alisa (Red Madrell) and wants to arrange a meet. Alisa has been living with her mom in the past six years, and also trying to raise Trife's daughter. Lexi meets with Alisa, and asks her if she wants to meet Sam. Alisa reluctantly agrees, with the discretion if Sam raises his voice, she'll call the police. Lexi then calls Sam to meet at Alisa's, to which he does. Sam arrives with Lexi at Alisa's house. Alisa is still angry at Sam for killing Trife, and even shows Sam Trife's daughter which Trife couldn't meet cause he's dead. Alisa doesn't know anything about who's after Sam either and when Alisa starts to raise her voice, spits on Sam and closes the door. Sam, a bit shaken, starts to leave, but Lexi offers Sam to come to her home.
Meanwhile, Dabs and Blammy (Don Klass) meet up with Omen and Dabs tells Omen about what Jay wants them to do, but doesn't tell Omen who it is, leaving Dabs to tell Omen that he knows what he looks like. Omen agrees to kill the person and all three leave, off to go find Sam. Later on, Dabs spots someone that looks like Sam, but turns out to be someone else that is dressed up in the same attire as Sam.
Lexi brings Sam to her apartment where they have sex, but only to be cut-off after Lexi decides to stop. Lexi opens up to Sam, telling her about her past with drugs, sex (including the rape mentioned earlier) and her relationship with Becky. Lexi notices marks on Sam's back and asks what they are from. We are then brought to a flashback from Sam in prison. Throughout the movie, flashback's of Sam's stay in jail are shown. While Sam is in his jail cell, Curtis (Cornell S. John) comes in and attacks Sam because Curtis, happens to be Trife's uncle, who we saw in the first film. He attempts to kill Sam by putting a pipe through his chest, but is unsuccessful after guards comes in to restrain Curtis. After the flashback is over, Sam quickly gets angry and leaves the house. Meanwhile, Moony and Jay meet-up, but their chat quickly turns bad when Moony doesn't want to be involved of killing Sam with Jay leaving Jay very angry and thinking that Moony doesn't care about Trife.
Sam gets seen by Dabs. Which he brings Omen and Blammy along to attack Sam. Omen wants to kill the person, but wants to see his face. Dabs doesn't want to so he tries to take the knife from Omen but Omen doesn't give him the knife and tells Blammy to turn Sam over. Blammy does, but Omen is surprised to see that the person they're out to kill, is his brother, Sam. Omen becomes enraged at Dabs and Blammy for not telling who they were after. Blammy didn't know anything about the kill, so Omen tells Dabs to explain everything. Dabs explains, but it doesn't change Omen's mind because it's his brother. Omen attempts to kill Dabs with the knife, but Sam wants to and holds the knife to Dabs' neck. Just when Sam is about to cut Dabs, he quickly remembers what he did to Trife and doesn't want to end up back in jail, so he drops the blade and knocks out Dabs in a single punch. Jay later arrives at Lexi's house looking for Sam (Lexi was supposed to keep Sam at her house until Jay arrives) but tells Jay that he isn't at her place.
Sam hatches a plot to get back at Ike, Andreas and Curtis by setting up a meet at Ike and Andrea's house. Sam is able to make Curtis arrive at the house through Desmond (David Ajala) a prison inmate who got out before Sam did and owes Sam a favour so, Sam asks Desmond to make Curtis show up at the house. Before Sam arrives at the house, Sam robs a couple and calls police saying that he's been robbed and the robber is heading into Ike and Andreas' house. Sam arrives at the house first under the alias "Bigman" and tells Ike and Andreas that him and his business partner (Curtis) want to work with Ike and Andreas to make some money. Ike disagrees and holds a knife up to Sam, only to be cut-off when Curtis arrives at the house. Ike goes to answer the door, and Sam pulls a gun on Andreas and tells him to stay where he is. As Ike and Curtis head downstairs, Curtis is armed with a gun behind is back and when he is brought into the room with Sam and Andreas, both Curtis and Andreas are surprised to find each other. Thinking he is set up by Andreas, Curtis pulls a gun out on Ike and Sam comes from behind and attacks Curtis, knocking Ike and Curtis to the ground. Meanwhile, the cops arrive at the house to arrest the "robber". Before the cops break in, Sam breaks Curtis' arm and runs to the bathroom. Curtis then gets up and runs to the bathroom to get Sam, but is too late when the cops make their way downstairs. Sam, who is trapped in the bathroom, starts looking around the room to find a way to get out. Meanwhile, Lexi tries to call Sam and leaves him a message that Jay is after him so he should watch out for him.
Sam finds an exit through the basement window and is able to escape the police. As Sam arrives at the apartment parking lot, Jay is already there, armed with a gun. Jay attacks Sam and both of them have a huge fight. When Jay and Sam are both on the ground, both of them see their weapons (Sam: baseball bat, Jay: gun), to which both of them run after. Jay is able to put the gun in front of his face before Sam was able to hit Jay with the bat first. Jay makes Sam beg just like what Trife did before he was killed in the first film, but Sam warns Jay that if he kills him, he'll suffer what Sam suffered in jail by showing Jay his wounds he suffered in jail. With Jay scared, Sam pushes Jay to the ground and grabs the gun, only to point it to his head saying to Jay if that's what you want, I'll do it to myself. But when Sam pulls the trigger, the gun is empty and throws the gun back at Jay saying "you're just like me". Sam leaves with Jay's phone wounded and heads to Lexi's house in the morning. The final shot of the film is when Lexi closes the door after Sam walks in.
Reaction
The film received mixed reviews, and was criticised for lack of plot, melodrama and "unrelenting aggro". However, an opening weekend box office of £1,203,319 indicates it resonated with its audience if not its critics.[1][2]
