Roman Wrestling is a folk wrestling style that appears to have been an import of Greek Wrestling. However, the Romans seem to have scorned the nudity of the Greeks, and adopted loincloths. As the loincloths provided a strong grip, many techniques were based on using them. Roman loincloth wrestling has survived in the Schwingen style of Switzerland, where the loincloth is worn over top of other clothing. In the Northern reaches of the Empire, where the climate was colder, the loincloth was discarded, and fully clothed versions remained, which may have been the precursors to later jacket wrestling styles.
