Robert "Robb" Flynn (born Lawrence Matthew Cardine before being adopted) July 19, 1968, Oakland, California) is best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the highly influential thrash metal/groove metal band Machine Head. Robb formed the band along with Adam Duce, Logan Mader and Tony Costanza after leaving Bay Area thrash band Vio-Lence.[1]
Rob went to American High School (Fremont, California) graduating in 1985, so his metal career started while in high school, the band Forbidden was originally called Forbidden Evil, as mentioned in the page for Forbidden.
Flynn also formed the thrash metal band Forbidden where he played from 1985 to 1987. He wrote 4 songs which appeared on their debut album, "Chalice Of Blood", "Forbidden Evil", "As Good As Dead" and part of "March Into Fire", but left before an album was released to join local Thrash metal rivals Vio-Lence along side present Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel.
In January 2005 he was selected as one of the 4 "team captains" of Roadrunner United, an act to celebrate Roadrunner's 25 year anniversary.[2] Flynn wrote, produced and recorded guitar on 4 songs, and sang a duet with Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage on one song "The Dagger". He wrote and played guitar on "The Rich Man", "Independent (Voice Of The Voiceless)", and "Army Of The Sun"
On 11 June 2007, Robb Flynn received the Metal Hammer 2007 Golden God Award.[3]
Machine Head's current release "The Blackening" has climbed on #54 of the US Billboard after only 2 weeks of being released, and was nominated for a Grammy, being by far the band's most successful album. Robb himself produced this album and its predecessor, "Through the Ashes of Empires".
Robb will appear in the new Roadrunner DVD entitled "Roadrunner United:The Concert", a DVD featuring members of core Roadrunner bands: Machine Head, Slipknot, Sepultura, Killswitch Engange and many more. Robb's outstanding performance in Slipknot's "Surfacing" along with Andreas Kisser - lead guitar, Dino Cazares - rhythm guitar, Adam Duce - bass and Roy Mayorga - drums will be included in the upcoming DVD.
