Arkalochori (also Arkalokhori) is a modern city on the island of Crete and the archaeological site of a Minoan sacred cave in eastern Crete. The sacred cave was used from 2500 to 1450 BCE.

It is located 32 km south of Heraklion and as of the 2001 census had a population of 10,897 inhabitants.

Geography

Arkalochori is not far south from the recently discovered Minoan palace at Galatas.

Archaeology

At the Arkalochori cave, a bronze and gold double axe known as the Arkalochori Axe has been excavated.
